Creating a Budget
A Clemson University study conducted by Professor Mark S. Henry found landscaping can result in more than a 100% return on investment. The report stated that “Homeowners wanting to increase the value of their property will do well to consider the cost-effective, return potential of landscaping, and to safeguard their investments by hiring licensed, professional landscape contractors to perform the work.”
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) says that money spent on quality landscaping is arguably the best home investment that you can make and typically returns 100% to 200% of your investment.
How much do I want to spend? Homeowners typically spend 10 to 20 percent of the value of their home on outdoor living spaces. What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to entertain? Do you want a spot to grow flowers/herbs? List your wants and needs. Give higher priority to public areas in the front yard and high-use areas in the backyard. Be open to installing in phases over time.
How much can I afford not to spend? There comes a point when the lack of quality landscaping can detract from the value of your home. If you will be living in your home for many years to come, spend for your needs, create a “Home Vacation” spot right in your own backyard.
